The University of San Diego’s men’s and women’s soccer teams are grabbing headlines with their strong play. The women’s team hasn’t lost yet, sitting at 3-0-4, which is a first for them after seven games.
The men’s team, currently ranked 10th, has a 4-1-2 record after knocking off UC Santa Barbara and tying with Kansas City.
Standout Players
Sophomore forward Iain Wagner (from St. Augustine High) put away two goals last week. Junior forward Steven Ramirez added a goal and an assist.
On the women’s side, senior forward Josefine Schlichting has been clutch, scoring in three straight matches—including a tiebreaker in their 3-2 win over Cal Baptist.
SDSU Soccer: Mixed Results
San Diego State University’s soccer teams are having a bit of a rollercoaster. The women’s team stands at 3-2-1, and sophomore forward Victoria Miller just picked up Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring three goals on only four shots.
Junior midfielder Katie Senn chipped in with two goals and an assist in wins over Pepperdine and UC Riverside.
Challenges for Men’s Team
The men’s team, though, is struggling. They’re at 2-5 after a home loss to Oregon State.
They’ll need to regroup if they want to get things back on track.
Point Loma Nazarene University: Rising Stars
Point Loma Nazarene University’s men’s soccer team looks promising with a 2-1-1 record. They recently took down Colorado School of Mines 4-0 and Regis 1-0.
Forward Emmett Layman had a big game with two goals and an assist against Mines. Elijah Langford clinched the win over Regis with a penalty kick.
Women’s Team Struggles
The women’s team is having a tougher go. They’re at 1-2-1 after a 2-0 loss to second-ranked Cal Poly Pomona.
Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College: Noteworthy Performances
Cal State San Marcos women’s team hasn’t lost yet, sitting at 1-0-2. Sophomore forward Addison Leite scored a crucial goal in their 1-1 draw with Concordia.
Palomar College’s women’s team broke a long losing streak by beating Mesa College 1-0. Freshman Taylor Devaney scored the only goal, and goalkeepers Nathalie Mancilla and Gianna Velasco combined for the shutout, moving them to 2-1-1.
Cuyamaca College and Southwestern College: Dominant Forces
The Cuyamaca College men’s team, nationally ranked, keeps rolling with a 3-0-1 record. Esteban Salas scored and Luciano Hermosillo assisted in their 2-0 win over Cerritos College.
Goalkeeper Luis Alvarez locked down a shutout in the same game. Southwestern College’s women’s team isn’t slowing down either, holding a 3-0-2 record.
Freshman forward Melany Perez netted four goals in their 6-0 rout of Grossmont. Not bad for a first-year player!

Upcoming Matches
The Toreros will kick off their home schedule against Yale on Thursday. They’re looking to keep the momentum going.
SDSU Volleyball: Mixed Fortunes
San Diego State’s volleyball team is sitting at 4-4. They lost the championship game at the Long Beach State Tournament but did hand Oregon its first loss of the season.
Junior middle blocker Amber Keen posted a career-high 14 kills against Oregon. That kind of performance could spark something.
Point Loma Nazarene Volleyball: Champions
PLNU’s volleyball team is turning heads with a 6-1 record after winning the Metro State Tournament in Denver. They took down several ranked teams, including No. 21 Bentley, No. 5 West Texas A&M, No. 25 Wayne State, and West Florida.
Senior outside hitter Abigail Nua came up big with 15 kills, four blocks, and two aces in the championship match against West Florida.
Miramar College Volleyball: A New Era
Miramar College volleyball, with new coach Brooke Callahan, has started strong at 9-4. They dropped just one set in four matches to win their own tournament, which feels like a good sign for the rest of the season.
Southwestern College Football: A Turnaround Season
Southwestern College’s football team is enjoying a turnaround with a 3-0 record after just two wins last season. Quarterback Brayten Silbor completed 12 of 22 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns in their recent 38-14 win over Long Beach City College.
Running back Jamarei Ashby-Phan added 94 yards on 13 carries. It’s early, but things are looking up for the Jaguars.
SDSU Tennis: Dominant Performances
San Diego State’s tennis team put on a show at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Arizona. They racked up six wins and looked sharp throughout the event.
Brock Anderson grabbed three singles victories. He also paired up with Denis Maijarov and William Kleege to snag doubles wins.
Maijarov picked up a singles win as well, which says a lot about the team’s depth. Honestly, their talent runs deeper than most people realize.
