Union College Athletes Shine with Weekly Conference Honors
Union College’s athletic teams had quite a week. Both the football and women’s basketball squads picked up big recognition from the Liberty League.
The football team, behind Patch Flanagan’s stellar play, pulled off a gritty win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and locked up the Liberty League championship. Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team saw Jelena Perovic shine, helping them edge out Russell Sage College in a tight game.

Union College Football Triumphs with Key Performances

The Union College football team put together a week to remember. Patch Flanagan led the way and earned Football Offensive Performer of the Week honors.
Flanagan ran the offense for 75 of the team’s 79 plays, guiding the Dutchmen to a 28-21 win over RPI. That victory brought the Dutchman Shoes back to Schenectady and clinched the Liberty League championship.
Patch Flanagan’s Stellar Performance
Flanagan put up some impressive numbers. He completed 20 of 36 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns.
On top of that, he rushed 39 times for 196 yards and scored twice more on the ground. His presence was felt early, helping Union jump out to a 21-0 lead by the second quarter.
Trey Rezendes III: A Rising Star
First-year player Trey Rezendes III made his mark on defense and picked up Football Rookie of the Week. He finished with five tackles—four solo—and played a key role in closing out the win.
His stop on third-and-goal from the five-yard line in the fourth quarter proved crucial, letting Union run out the clock and seal the victory.
Ryan Grenier’s Defensive Contributions
Senior defensive back Ryan Grenier landed on the honor roll for his efforts. He tied for the team lead with nine tackles, snagged an interception, recorded a tackle for loss, and hurried the quarterback.
Grenier’s interception near midfield set up Union’s third touchdown and helped build that early lead. He also played a big part in a critical red-zone stand in the fourth quarter.
Women’s Basketball Shines with Jelena Perovic
On the basketball court, Jelena Perovic put on a show and earned Women’s Basketball Performer of the Week. She posted a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds, plus strong defense, to help Union beat Russell Sage College 64-61.
Dominating on Both Ends of the Court
Perovic stuffed the stat sheet. She added four blocks, two assists, and a steal.
Her seven points and three blocks in the second period kept Union in it by halftime. In the third, she scored six during a 19-9 run that put Union ahead.
Perovic kept it going in the fourth quarter, grabbing eight rebounds and knocking down two clutch free throws with 21 seconds left to make it a two-possession game.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Union College’s football and women’s basketball teams have set a promising tone for the rest of their seasons. The Liberty League’s recognition lifts the players’ spirits and shines a brighter light on Union College’s athletic programs.
