The Bears actually grabbed a 65-62 lead with just 1:36 left in regulation, but Pima’s sophomore Melicia Nelson came up huge with a three-point play to tie it up and force overtime.

Early in the second quarter, the Aztecs trailed 20-17. Then they exploded for a 17-2 run and grabbed a 34-22 lead.

By halftime, Pima had outscored Phoenix 17-9 in the second quarter and led 34-25. That burst really set the tone for the rest of the night.

Standout Performances

Sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller led the way, dropping 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and going a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Freshman Reigne Waugh put up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, plus four assists.

Contributions from the Bench

Sophomore Ahdiayh Chee didn’t miss a shot, going 3-for-3 from the field, 3-for-3 from deep, and 2-for-2 from the line. She scored nine of her 11 points in the second half.

Nelson nearly notched a triple-double, finishing with nine points, 11 boards, nine assists, four steals, and two blocks. Freshman Lucy Fisher chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Nevaeh Urenda had eight points off the bench, which definitely helped.

Defensive Prowess

Pima’s defense turned up the heat in overtime. The Aztecs forced Phoenix College into five turnovers, and the Bears missed all six of their shots in the extra period.

That defensive pressure made all the difference and kept Phoenix off the scoreboard when it mattered most.

Team Statistics

The Aztecs shot a strong 48.1% from the field, hitting 26 of 54 shots. That kind of efficiency, paired with their defense, really carried them.

Pima got contributions from all over the roster, which says a lot about their depth and how many ways they can win games.

Looking Ahead

With the win, Pima Community College moves to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in ACCAC play. Next up, the Aztecs finally hit the road for the first time since December 17 to face Chandler-Gilbert on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

It’s another shot for Pima to keep the momentum rolling and see what they’re really made of away from home.
