Pima Women Triumph Over Phoenix College in Overtime Thriller

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team showed a ton of grit and skill in a wild overtime win against Phoenix College. The No. 12-ranked Aztecs held the Bears scoreless in the extra period and snagged a 74-65 victory at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

With this win, their record bumps up to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC). The whole game felt like a rollercoaster, with lead changes and tense moments everywhere you looked.

Both teams came in with matching 5-2 records in ACCAC play, so you could feel the tension from the opening tip. Pima lost a double-digit lead at one point but then outscored Phoenix College 9-0 in overtime, clamping down on defense when it mattered most.

The Bears actually grabbed a 65-62 lead with just 1:36 left in regulation, but Pima’s sophomore Melicia Nelson came up huge with a three-point play to tie it up and force overtime.

Early in the second quarter, the Aztecs trailed 20-17. Then they exploded for a 17-2 run and grabbed a 34-22 lead.

Sophomore Ahdiayh Chee didn’t miss a shot, going 3-for-3 from the field, 3-for-3 from deep, and 2-for-2 from the line. She scored nine of her 11 points in the second half.

Nelson nearly notched a triple-double, finishing with nine points, 11 boards, nine assists, four steals, and two blocks. Freshman Lucy Fisher chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Nevaeh Urenda had eight points off the bench, which definitely helped.

Pima’s defense turned up the heat in overtime. The Aztecs forced Phoenix College into five turnovers, and the Bears missed all six of their shots in the extra period.
