Heading into Saturday, the Pima Aztecs had already stacked up six wins in a row. Glendale Community College, meanwhile, came in with a 5-5 record and 1-3 in conference play.

From the tip-off, Pima looked like the stronger squad. Glendale managed to hang in there for a bit, but the Aztecs grabbed an early lead and didn’t let go.

By halftime, Pima was up 37-27. They really pulled away in the third quarter, stretching the gap to 59-37.

Pima’s defense didn’t let up, holding Glendale to just 12 points in the fourth. The Aztecs closed it out for a comfortable 78-49 finish.

Key Performances

A few players really stood out in this one. Melicia Nelson grabbed her second triple-double of the season, putting up 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Nelson’s energy on both ends made a difference. Kiley Sours-Miller also stepped up, dropping 21 points and 12 rebounds, plus three steals.

Her presence in the paint gave Pima a steady scoring threat and some much-needed muscle on defense.

Coach Todd Holthaus’ Insights

Head coach Todd Holthaus admitted the game wasn’t perfect, but he credited the team’s depth and resilience. “Our depth wore them down and I think we have kind of a mentality that we just kind of keep coming. We try to eliminate any runs by the other teams,” he said.

Holthaus also pointed out how aggressive they were on the boards. He liked how the team chased down offensive rebounds and turned them into second-chance points.

Offensive and Defensive Highlights

Pima’s offense really clicked in the third quarter, where they outscored Glendale 22-10. Their defense was just as tough, shutting Glendale down to only 12 points in the last quarter.

Here’s a quick look at some key stats:

  • Second-Chance Points: Pima racked up 23 second-chance points, making the most of their offensive boards.
  • Points in the Paint: The Aztecs scored 26 in the paint, with Sours-Miller leading the way.
  • Free-Throw Shooting: They hit 12 of 14 from the line (85.7%). That’s clutch.

Individual Contributions

Besides Nelson and Sours-Miller, others chipped in too. Reigne Waugh added 13 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field and hitting one from deep.

Pima’s roster features four Southern Arizona players who’ve really become key pieces:

  • Jolee Nelson: Freshman guard from Salpointe Catholic
  • Nevaeh Urenda: Freshman guard from Flowing Wells
  • Cassie Coolidge: Sophomore guard from Sahuaro
  • Gabriella Sanchez: Sophomore post/forward from Tucson High

Looking Ahead

With this victory, the Pima Aztecs bump their season record up to 9-2. They’re still undefeated in conference play at 3-0.

The next challenge? An away game against Scottsdale Community College. That one’s coming up Wednesday, tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
