Paris Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei Suffers Severe Burns After Alleged Attack by Former Boyfriend

Rebecca Cheptegei, a long-distance runner who competed in the Paris Olympics, has recently endured a harrowing ordeal. The 33-year-old athlete suffered severe burns after an alleged assault by her former boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema.

The incident occurred in her home in Endebess, a small town in western Kenya. This attack has left her fighting for her life in a Kenyan hospital.

The dispute, reportedly fueled by an ongoing conflict between Cheptegei and Ndiema, escalated tragically after they quarreled outside their home.

Ndiema allegedly doused Cheptegei with petrol and set her ablaze. Medical personnel rushed her to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where she is receiving specialized treatment for her critical injuries.

Local police are continuing their investigation into this appalling act of domestic violence.

Rebecca Cheptegei Earned the Spot to Compete at the Paris Olympics After Her Exploits at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships

Rebecca Cheptegei, a distance runner from Uganda, showcased her prowess at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand. There, she won gold in the Up and Downhill Mountain Race, clocking an impressive time of 46.25.

Her nearest competitor, fellow Ugandan athlete Annet Chelangat, finished in 46.52.

In December of the same year, Cheptegei finished fourth in the women’s marathon at the 2022 Abu Dhabi Marathon, marking a time of 2:22:46. This race is recognized as a World Athletics Elite Label Road Race.

These accomplishments paved the way for Cheptegei to earn her spot at the Paris Games. She represented Uganda in the Olympic marathon, finishing 44th with a season-best time of 2:23.14.
