Game Recap: A Tough Battle for the Scots

Macalester entered the night 0-2, hungry for their first win. The first quarter wasn’t easy, as the Scots struggled to get shots to fall.

Still, a three-pointer from sophomore forward Samantha Smith kept them close, trailing just 14-9 after one.

Second Quarter Surge

The Scots fought hard in the second quarter. Sophomore guard Emma Karlin and junior guard Kendall Bernbaum each drained a three, closing the gap to 22-19 with a little over seven minutes left.

First-year guard Faith Accardo then rattled off six straight points, nudging Macalester ahead 27-24. Buena Vista answered right back, though, putting together a 9-0 run and heading into halftime up 31-27.

Third Quarter Challenges

Early in the third, the Scots kept fighting. Sophomore forward Cady Davis added five points, trimming the lead to 35-32.

But the Beavers went on another 9-0 run, stretching their advantage to 44-32. Junior guard Mary Daley scored six points as part of an 8-3 Macalester push, but Buena Vista finished the quarter up 57-43.

Final Quarter Struggles

In the fourth, Macalester just couldn’t find a way back. The Beavers’ lead ballooned to 24 before senior forward Ellie Corbett knocked down the final basket for the Scots.

Buena Vista shot 48.4 percent in the second half, while Macalester managed only 25 percent. That pretty much tells the story.

Key Performances and Statistics

Mary Daley led the Scots with 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Cady Davis grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, along with seven points and two steals.

First-year guard Megan Matthews chipped in three steals, four points, and six rebounds. Buena Vista’s Mary Walker led all scorers with 21 points.

Team Comparisons

Buena Vista outscored Macalester 42-22 in the paint, making their presence felt close to the basket. Their ability to close out quarters strong made a real difference.

Macalester’s struggles shooting in the second half made a comeback tough to imagine.
