But Sunday was rough. Cabrillo handed them a 79-63 defeat. Even so, there were flashes of promise to build on.

Standout Performances Against Hartnell

Marcos Rosales really set the tone, dropping 23 points and shooting efficiently. He hit 8-15 from the field, went 4-10 from deep, and kept his turnovers at zero.

Cody Whitmer was on fire too, nailing 19 points and shooting 6-for-9 from three. Coach Justin Claus gave props to the whole team—every single player made their mark.

  • Marcos Rosales: 23 points, 8-15 FG, 4-10 3PT
  • Cody Whitmer: 19 points, 6-9 3PT
  • Team Effort: All 12 players participated and nine different players scored

Coach Claus stressed how big this win was for their confidence. He pointed out Kaden Erlenbush’s aggressive play—six dunks over the weekend!—and Luka Radovanovic’s solid contributions.

Challenges Against Cabrillo

Cabrillo was a different beast. Rosales led again with 16 points, but CR struggled against Cabrillo’s defense and their work on the offensive boards.

Alfonso Medina put up 15 points, Erlenbush added 12, but Cabrillo just kept coming.

  • Marcos Rosales: 16 points
  • Alfonso Medina: 15 points
  • Kaden Erlenbush: 12 points

Coach Claus noted they did a bit better with ball security than against SF City, but still coughed up 14 turnovers. Cabrillo turned those into 25 points, plus another 25 from offensive rebounds. CR just couldn’t buy a three, shooting a chilly 15% from deep. That made it tough to keep up.

CR Women’s Basketball: A Gritty Victory

The CR women had a wild weekend too. They clawed back from early deficits and edged out a dramatic 60-59 win over Santa Ana in the San Mateo Tournament. This came right after a comfortable win against Chaffey. Talk about resilience and nerves of steel.

Heroics from Mia Hoogendoorn

Mia Hoogendoorn saved her best for last, hitting the game-winner in the final seconds. She’d been cold from deep all game, but nailed her only three-pointer with just two ticks left. Nora Talty led the way with 14 points and eight boards. Hoogendoorn chipped in 13, while Addison Wingate and Mayleah Jackson each added nine points and four assists.

  • Nora Talty: 14 points, 8 rebounds
  • Mia Hoogendoorn: 13 points, game-winning basket
  • Addison Wingate: 9 points, 4 assists
  • Mayleah Jackson: 9 points, 4 assists

Coach Bree Northern loved how her team bounced back from early holes and matched Santa Ana’s physicality. She said an early timeout helped settle everyone down, and they went into halftime tied at 25.

Building Momentum

Redwoods started the fourth quarter with a lead and managed to hang on, helped by the energy from the bench. Coach Northern gave a nod to Wingate for her hustle inside and her strong start to the year. She also shouted out the whole team for their grit and the bench for keeping things lively.

Now sitting at 4-1, the women’s team is gearing up for a tournament at Sierra College. They’ll take on Fresno City, the hosts, and San Francisco City College. Coach Northern wants to keep the momentum rolling, but knows they still have plenty to work on every day.

Looking Ahead

College of the Redwoods men’s and women’s teams have both shown some promise early this season. The men want to bounce back and fix their turnover problems before the Ed Boyle Invitational at Mendocino College.

The women, on the other hand, hope to keep their momentum going. They’ll try to build on their recent win at the upcoming tournament at Sierra College.
